Christy and I ticked Formula 1 weekend off our Singapor [...]

Christy and I ticked Formula 1 weekend off our Singapore checklist after our September 2011 visit, but we were left with several reasons to return to the country. The number one reason? To go to ZoukOut.

Neither of us are big on the party scene, but we are huge fans of trying new things in the company of our friends.

And when James invited me to join him and his family in Singapore for ZoukOut weekend last December, I said yes immediately. Christy was scheduled to be in London at the time, so checking out the two-day beachside event for LMT became my sole responsibility.

With this awesome group of people, that is.

Champagne with the James’ parents and brothers before ZoukOut

At Siloso Beach in Sentosa with James’ cousin Rocky and Rocky’s wife, Lindsay

.

On the first night, we arrived in time for Kaskade’s 2 1/2 hour set. (See the full lineup here.) But before we joined the crowd at the Moon Stage, we had to fuel ourselves up with some Red Bull. It was past midnight and we all flew in at different hours that day from four different countries, so this stuff was definitely an elixir.

Though there may have been a splash of vodka here and there. And some tequila on the side.

As with most things in Singapore, drinks can add up to a lot of money. Thank you, boys, for being our drink sponsors. We wouldn’t have survived without you.

.

Then, it was party time.

A spacious first night at ZoukOut

.

The first night was relatively tame, in that you could actually get to where you wanted without stepping on someone else. Or spilling your drink all over yourself. Or almost losing your phone. Or being groped by some random stranger. (More on that in a bit.)

It was all about kicking your flip-flops off – I would say “thongs” to adapt James and his brothers’ Aussie lingo, but that would come off wrong in several parts of the world, wouldn’t it? – and dancing mindlessly till your feet hurt… or with already-swollen feet. (More on that in a bit, too.)

This is what “relatively tame” at ZoukOut looks like

.

James and I returned to our hotel around 4am, Rocky and Lindsay around the same time. Jeremy and Josh were back just in time to have breakfast with their folks at around 7:30. I remember wondering how it was even possible for them to stay up well past sunrise given how exhausted we all were the day before.

Twenty-four hours later, I would wonder no more.

So here’s what went down on ZoukOut weekend, Day 2:

As James’ brothers slept the afternoon away, his parents lounged around the hotel, and Rocky and Lindsay went about on their own, James and I met up with some of his Singapore-based friends from university.

We had brunch – it was 1:30pm – at Tanjong Beach Club. I regret not taking photos of our Mexican Breakfast Quesadilla, The Weekender Fry Up, Fresh Fruit Bowl, and White Sangria, but here’s the perfect blogpost from Blessed Haven that includes pictures of the yummy food (and more)!

Post-brunch beers by the poolside

The beach under the midday sun

.

Then it was back to the hotel for some pre-dinner vodka.

A while ago, I brought up the topic of swollen feet, right?

Here’s why: James and Josh decided to turn the bed into a wrestling mat and in one move, James ended up slamming his right foot against the marble counter facing the bed.

His foot was too big to fit into the hotel’s ice bucket. Yes, we tried.

.

Nothing broken, thankfully. The injury wasn’t about to stop him from the second night of ZoukOut.

And dinner at Lao Pa Sat.

How much satay can you consume in one minute?

.

Back on Siloso Beach, we saw Porter Robinson, Knife Party, A-Trak, Calvin Harris, and Paul Van Dyk. The beach was packed with people in various stages of drunkenness. (Girls, watch out for the occasional perv who might try to grab your bum or whatnot. I unfortunately speak from experience.)

More people on the second night

.

Early in the evening, Jeremy almost lost his phone. He was dancing, it flew, and got buried in the sand.

But this guy found it and handed it back.

A reminder that there were more cool people around than there were suspicious ones

.

We also got to meet Gareth McGrillen of Knife Party.

Want to meet the DJs? Hang around the side of the stage.

.

But somewhere along the way, we lost Jeremy.

Hey, Jem, where did you go?

.

As the sun came out and the crowd began to thin, and with Jeremy still nowhere in sight, we decided to return to the hotel and figured he would find his own way back.

Fortunately, we were right, and we were all reunited for a while before James and I flew home to Manila. The rest of his family followed a few days later, and we were to go on several more adventures throughout the holidays.

And lose Jeremy a couple more times in the process.

.

One of the things I was less than excited about with this trip, besides having to endure actual winter conditions, was the inevitability of missing out on Christmas in the Philippines.

I don’t know where I got visions of a cold and soulless London Christmas from, but I shouldn’t have worried. I don’t think there’s a better place to spend Christmas away from home than here. Unless you end up locked indoors, you’re bound to feel some Christmas cheer when you’re out and about.

Covent Garden decked out in oversized Christmas ornaments for the kids, and a giant Jack Daniel’s barrel tree for the adults

Christmas trees everywhere, including a really tall one right in the middle of Trafalgar Square.

Nothing like traditional holiday fare, from mince tarts to mulled everything (wine or cider), to put you in the right kind of holiday mood.

Millions of Santas running for a cause is pretty good too.

As is delicious hot chocolate and skating at Somerset House.

Winter Festival

Needless to say, the holidays are a huge production in London. It’s where German-inspired winter markets have transformed into massive outdoor fairs complete with rides, Christmas grottos, and more of that yummy food I was talking about earlier.

I mean, really. How can you not feel Christmas-y?

I meant for this post to come up before the New Year, but I literally couldn’t sit down long enough for a good write. So as much as this is a post for the readers, it’s also for me to finally greet all of you lovely people all kinds of wonderful holiday blessings. Better late than never, right?

*Special danke to my sort of cousin, Dennis, for letting me use some of his awesome pictures here

I don’t know why I feel the need to see views of cities from above. I suppose I’ve seen enough good ones to convince myself that it’s a worthwhile touristy thing to do wherever I go.

Naturally, this meant that the London Eye had to be on my bucket list. It isn’t exactly cheap at almost L20. And given that there’s a long queue that earns you a ride of just one revolution, the reviews are mixed on whether it’s an activity worth including in any itinerary.

To settle my craving, I decided to take someone’s advice and check out the views from the London Monument.

Entrance to the London Monument

The plus about the Monument is that it’s also a historical building. Built some years after the great London fire, it was meant to be a testament to the city’s rising from the ashes. And also, symbolically, it stands at 202 feet – the exact distance that separates it from the epicenter of the fire where it started in 1666.

Steps up

It’s a walk up at 311 steps, but you come home with views like this and a certificate (that you fill in yourself, ha ha) for L3 all in.

Views from the top

My certificate (I put that in myself)

I had barely a week left to my visit when I decided to go on the London Eye anyway. Somehow, I thought it was an appropriate way to say ‘ta ta’ to London after spending nearly two months there.

Queue to the Eye

Boarding!

The good news is that the queues move pretty quickly. Buying a ticket and waiting to go on probably took less than an hour, which seemed miraculous seeing as how we never bothered with making reservations ahead of time.

Views from the London Eye – great photo op

We came home with really good photos, of course. But just between you and me? The Big Smoke’s 10x more fun when you stay on the ground:)

Stay tuned because I’m writing about all that fun stuff next:)

For now, I leave you with a photo of people looking down upon London atop Primrose Hill on Christmas Day – probably my favorite recommendation for taking in the views when in town. Of course the best part is that you won’t have to pay a thing:)

It was Christy’s last weekend in the country befo [...]

It was Christy’s last weekend in the country before flying to London for the holidays, so we crammed in one day trip as a send-off.

Our regular conspirators on trips like these are Mic and Olan, whom you’ve met through our Mountain Highs series and our Bagac feature. These quick getaways have become somewhat of a tradition for the four of us.

This time, Mic suggested Pampanga. First stop: Abe’s Farm in Magalang.

We went for a stroll around the place. We didn’t see exactly what this farm reared or cultivated, but there was a lot of space to lounge around in.

It’s a quaint location if you and your friends or family are just looking for a near-enough-from-the-city, out-of-town spot to just be lazy.

Like so.

Our group, however, was there to eat. So we settled into the restaurant.

And ate. A LOT.

Gambas Al Aljillo (Shrimps in Olive Oil and Garlic)

Sinuteng Baby Squid (Baby Squid in Olive Oil and Seasoning)

Inihaw na Liempo (Grilled Pork Belly)

Gising-Gising (Diced Water Spinach Stems in Chili-Coconut Milk)

Normally, neither of us choose Filipino food when eating out. As Patti says, she’s convinced her mom will always cook it better. But this single dish was enough to make her change her mind: Abe’s legendary Lamb Adobo.

And while the Abe’s Farm menu was no different from the Abe’s menu in Serendra, there was still something special about dining in good company in a quiet environment, away from the chaos of the metropolis.

Besides, Mic swore by the dessert in a very strange place in San Fernando, Pampanga. We wondered what he meant by strange, until…

This is the Grand Palazzo Royale. A massive events complex with the oddest… we’ll let these photos do the talking.

Tacky? Yes. Confusing? More so. But fun in a weird way. And yes, the dessert was pretty decent, too.

The cafe’s name is Cioccolo. We opted for three types of chocolate cake, and a Brazo de Mercedes cheesecake to, um, neutralize our palates.

We may as well have been hauled home in a pig truck.

In May of this year, a handful of us trekked to the cra [...]

In May of this year, a handful of us trekked to the crater of Mt. Pinatubo. It was one of those moments that makes a person feel he or she can accomplish anything in the world.

I exaggerate, but you get the point.

Towards the end of October, my second volcano-related adventure was booked—a weekend trip to the province of Bicol with Mt. Mayon as our start-off point. No lengthy treks or bumpy 4×4 rides this time. Taking ATVs to the foot of the volcano was the big plan.

We went straight from an early morning flight into Legazpi City, to Lignon Hill, where we bought tickets for the ATV tour. At about P3,500 for four, the discounted package also included free passes to the Lignon Hill zip line.

From there, someone guided us to where the ATVs were based.

If I’m not mistaken, this place is operated by Your Brother Travel and Tours, the only ones accredited by the Department of Tourism and the Legazpi City government. (Read about them here.) They’ve been in business since 2007, but the Mayon ATV craze was recently revived after Zac Efron came to the country and visited Bicol. We were told the white ATV in the photo above is the one he used.

When doing this, wear something light and comfy, and shoes that can offer you stability as you will be subjected to some climbing. Be prepared to get a little muddy as well. I made the mistake of wearing jeans, but rolled them up to keep them from getting drenched.

We had two guides with us. The one leading the pack also proved to be a nifty photographer. He kept my camera with him throughout, so I have to credit him for most of the photos here. The guy at our back made sure we all stayed together. I have to credit him for keeping me alive.

More on that later.

If you’re new to the whole ATV/quad experience, they give you a primer on how to work them. This is me reviewing their instructions:

And off we went, with the cloud-covered volcano in our midst:

Controlling these vehicles took more upper body strength than I expected. Having said that, it should be known that I am, indeed, somewhat of a weakling. It took me a while to work it out, and I almost drove mine straight into a pit. Guide Two saved me from falling right in. One of about three saves before I got the hang of it.

What I learned? Slow and steady do not go together when driving ATVs. You need good speed to get you across the rough spots. And these streams.

This was probably the roughest part of the trail:

James slowed down to get this shot, and proceeded to speed off (read: abandon me) about five seconds later. I fell quite a way behind but was determined to look fearless in the company of all these men. Yeah, they saw right through it.

I can’t recall how long the ride actually took, but sometime later, we stopped and went for a walk…

…which led us up this hill formed by volcanic rocks. The climb takes about five minutes. Maybe even less. It still required a good amount of caution, of course.

At the top? A helipad.

Used to transport guests to Misibis Bay.

You can see Misibis Bay past the trees.

Now, getting down from the helipad, we were presented with two options: using the zip line for an additional P250 per person, or going on foot. We went for the latter since the line didn’t provide the most scenic of views anyway. Plus we had our complimentary one waiting for us at Lignon Hill.

We made our way down the rocks and got back on our ATVs. Went through the town to get to the base, then set off to Lignon Hill. Zip line time.

Going Spiderman-style was James’ choice, though after slamming his head against a few branches across the way, he probably wouldn’t recommend that anyone follow suit.

It was kind of strange having to zip over the parking lot, but you do get a nice view of Mayon on your left. (Or on your right, if you do, indeed, decide to go upside down.)

We covered all that ground in a single morning. If you have a few days to spare, other parts of the area you could visit are Donsol in Sorsogon to swim with whale sharks, the perpetual site of international Survivor series—Caramoan, or Naga City for some wake boarding. And if you want to see more of Mayon, there are different trek packages available, including a two-day, one-night climb to the crater for more experienced hikers.

Thanks to James, Tito Jaime, Juan Carlos, and the rest of the clan for this awesome trip!

A good friend of LMT just got married! And because her [...]

A good friend of LMT just got married! And because her wedding happened faaaar away in California, I decided to do a little tribute from right here.

I should warn you that these pictures look vintage because they’re genuinely old. Eloisa and I traveled to Malaysia at the tail end of our stint at Ayala Museum so the ones included here have to be at least 7 years old.

If you’ve been following us for a while now, you might know about Patti’s passion for F1 and have absolutely no idea that I used to have a thing for MotoGP. Blame Eloisa for introducing me to the world of bike racing and making me watch long enough to develop a fascination for the sport’s most iconic figure, Valentino Rossi.

Anyway, one day, I was sad because all my friends were off traveling in Europe or the States or somewhere while I was stuck at work. So E and I dreamed up of a trip to Malaysia to stalk Valentino Rossi while MotoGP made its annual stop there, to get me out of the doldrums. And it probably would have stayed an idea if not for me sharing it with Non, a good friend of mine who, at the time, was working as an editor of an expat magazine in KL. She said, “Well, I get free walkabout passes from my job so you really should.” And that was that. How could we not, right?

Old trip = hazy memories. I definitely had an abundance of great food and fun times, but I think I’ll need a follow up visit to give a proper KL post some justice. I’m meant to go back and see some friends anyway. Here are some pictures from that first trip for now:

At the Petronas Twin Towers and Sultan Abdul Samad Building

Menala Kuala Lumpur, the Kuala Lumpur Tower

.

Me with favorite people I don’t get to see enough of:

With Eloisa, Gino, and Non having tapas at La Bodega, Bangsar; and with Mash and Stef

Aaaand we even managed to squeeze in some Zouk before the race early the next day

.

Finally, Sepang.

VIP Pitwalk

MotoGP 2004 was dominated by a rivalry between Valentino Rossi and Sete Gibernau. I was a big Vale fan, as you now know, while Eloisa favored Sete.

We never had problems with this, and I pretty much took it for granted that Vale was always better. Haha! We are fans of many other racers too, and this is what happens when you let fan girls roam free with walkabout passes before the race:

Toni Elias

Randy de Puniet

Almost missed Dani Pedrosa because he looked like a litte boy

Spotted from way off, we actually had the audacity to wave Marco Melandri over while miming taking pictures. I still can’t believe he was so accommodating!

This picture of us with Nicky Hayden, 2006 MotoGP champion, 2 years after this one also came out here:

Valentino’s right-hand man, Uccio Salleti – Where’s Vale? Here we are posing for a picture with his best friend while waiting for THE Vale photo op. Don’t ask me how Eloisa knows this.

After a long race and two stakeout spots later, we finally catch “The Doctor” for pictures. Here I am congratulating him on winning the race. Happy that I don’t look like I’m about to throw up, which was really what I felt like doing at the time. Ironically, it wasn’t from seeing Valentino Rossi up close, but more likely because of mild heat stroke. It’s STILL my favorite celebrity photo ever.

Of course Eloisa and I go on to have more adventures together after this one. But overall, this has to by my hands-down favorite. (We miss you loads, E! You looked gorgeous at the wedding!)

This is what the University of Makati looked like short [...]

This is what the University of Makati looked like shortly before kickoff. It was the kind of downpour notorious for canceling football matches, as witnessed by UFL spectators in the latter half of last season.

Last Saturday’s game was a different case, however. It was the Clear Dream Match, the highly anticipated Younghusband vs. Younghusband event that gave even non-fans of the sport a reason to watch football.

A while back, the Clear Facebook Page invited everyone to vote for the players they wanted to see in Phil’s and James’ teams. The top 40 were included in the brothers’ draft and draw on August 4th to determine which team each player would join. The selection included Azkals and UFL players, as well as Volcanoes, models, and celebrities.

Finally, on August 25th, it was game day. Given how unpredictable the weather was in the weeks leading up to the event, we were certain the organizers had an extra layer of stress to deal with! Rain or shine, this was one match that needed to push through.

And while the sun was intense in the days before, a downpour decided to add some drama to the situation.

“Mud wrestling,” Jonah Romero called it in the post-match press conference.

It was obvious, however, innate competitive spirit aside, that all players were there for the fun of it, and for a good cause—the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation.

Amidst the slipping and stumbling on the pitch, Team Phil managed to get three goals past Team James’ defense, finishing the first half 3-0. The first two goals were courtesy of Phil Younghusband himself, the third by Ossenyou Diop.

In the second half, James scored what was his team’s first and only goal of the match, bringing the game to 3-1 until two more goals courtesy of Yannick Tuason and Phil caused things to end 5-1.

The success of the Clear Dream Match already had Clear announcing another face-off next year. While James looks forward to a chance to get back at his brother then, he says he can reclaim bragging rights sooner in a game of FIFA on their video game console.

.

Now for some pictures.

I opted to shoot from the stands because I didn’t bring my rain gear. It made taking good shots even more challenging than usual for me, so I apologize for all the blurred images.

These were the teams’ starting lineups:

Many urban street artists prefer to work anonymously, w [...]

Many urban street artists prefer to work anonymously, which is part of why their work is so fascinating. (Check out this entertaining exchange between Robbo and Bansky on a wall in Camden.)

But the choice to remain unidentified isn’t a new concept. On the brink of the 19th century, an ukiyo-e artist in Japan emerged with over 140 works produced in a span of 10 months. Known as Toshusai Sharaku from Hacchobori, Edo, he created woodblock prints mostly of actors as kabuki or kyogen. The prints appeared between May 1794 to February 1795. Then suddenly, he disappeared and was soon out of the minds of the public.

Today, Sharaku’s works can be found in different institutions around the world such as The British Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Tokyo National Museum.

And in 1996, an exhibition entitled Sharaku Interpreted by Japan’s Contemporary Artists was mounted. As written by Masanobu Ito in the exhibition catalogue, it is “neither an overview of works by Sharaku, nor an assembly of famous examples of ukiyo-e. Rather, this exhibition is a report if the personal reinterpretation of Sharaku by today’s graphic designers and artists confronted with this artist two hundred years after his time.”

The exhibition also hopes to “provide an opportunity to illustrate the connection between ukiyo-e and the graphic design of Japan, the differences between the approaches used in graphic design and contemporary art, and the diversity of today’s artistic expression that cannot simply be grouped under the single heading of ‘contemporary art.’”

On tour since 2007, Sharaku Interpreted opened last Monday, July 9th. Presented by The Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM) in cooperation with Ayala Museum, the Embassy of Japan and MUJI, the program began with welcome remarks by the Ayala Museum’s Senior Director Mariles Gustilo, followed by messages from Director of the Japan Information and Culture Center/Embassy of Japan Kiyoshi Takeuchi and Shuji Takatori, Director of Japan Foundation.

The University of the Philippines Center for International Studies (UPCIS) Noh Theater Ensemble followed this up with a performance before the exhibit was unveiled.

There are three key components of Sharaku Interpreted: Reproductions of Sharaku, Sharaku in Graphic Art, and Homage to Sharaku, which include 28 reproductions of Sharaku bust portraits, 28 posters by graphic artists, and 23 paintings, sculptures, and ceramic and woodblock prints, all done by Japanese contemporary artists.

Two boxes are set up side-by-side within the exhibition space, where guests will find cards in envelopes and markers. “Everyone likes someone as you like someone,” a note reads. The objective here is to select an envelope, keep the card with the drawing, and draw your own favorite person on the blank one. Then place your drawing back in the envelope and place it in the second box. The drawings that come from the Philippines will then be shipped off to the exhibition’s next leg (Indonesia), where the exercise happens all over again.

Prior to our country, Sharaku Interpreted was in China. Here’s the drawing Coco ended up with:

And the one he’s sending off when the exhibition moves on:

On July 29th, Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo will open this exhibition to the public:

Remarkable for their rich coloring and bold designs, handwoven textiles are an important part of the long, varied cultural heritage of the Ilocos region. History records that inabel has its traditions rooted at the time the Spanish colonized the Ilocos region in the 1500s. Neighboring Asian countries were already trading their gold, ceramics, iron and beads with inabel in the natural harbors along the coasts. For centuries inabel has been used as clothing, blankets and even sails for galleons.

Today, the flooding of the local market with factory-processed imported textiles and the lure of higher income generating jobs for men and women in foreign countries have reduced the number of weavers to continue the tradition of textile weaving. Thus the need for the study center for traditional hand woven textiles of the Northern Philippines. The center is currently documenting traditional low land inabel and weaving communities. Part of the documentation process is to faithfully reproduce the various patterns and designs by working with weaving communities that still carry the tradition. It is the hope of the center to achieve sustainability between scholars and weavers by re introducing quality made inabel not as ordinary textiles but as artworks produced by artisans.

The exhibit will showcase hand woven textiles done on traditional wooden looms by Ilocano artisans using weaving techniques passed on through generations. Woven patterns on the fabric were based on designs of antique blankets dating from the 1800s to the mid-1900s. Although the reproduced blankets have the traditional designs in them, they are made younger by using colors, scales, and some technology of today. The show will likewise exhibit scarves and throws made of 100% locally grown silk from the region.

The Antique textile collection owned by our friend Al M. Valenciano is part of the Balay ni Atong Collection. This is currently the base collection for the study center for traditional hand woven textiles of the northern Philippines. Part of the Antique collection were recently exhibited at the Brooks Art Museum in Memphis, TN.

Part of the proceeds of the exhibit will benefit the study center for traditional hand woven textiles of the Northern Philippines.

All of our readers are invited to come to this exhibition. Here is a summary of details and a map:

July 29,2012, Sunday, 3:00pm, Pinto Art Gallery, Antipolo, Rizal
